Trying yoga again...five years later.
I've posted over on Musings by Meghan about my workout schedule. You all know that I'm trying to take a step back from super intense workouts and let my body reset and recover. In my current favorite workouts post, I alluded to the fact that I wanted to incorporate more yoga into my routine this year. I have a little bit of history with yoga - I used to go to classes a couple times a week in college. To be perfectly honest though, during those classes I was much more focused on a) how I looked, b) what those around me were thinking and c) spiraling into the comparison trap, that I didn't get a lot out of my practice. I almost always fell asleep during Savasana at the end of class, instead of maintaining some semblance of mindfulness.
Since college, I've sporadically attended yoga classes - I think only five times over the course of the past five years. I didn't really "get" it - why would I want to hold poses without breaking a sweat, when I could run or do a high-intensity cardio workout instead? I simply wanted my workouts to be as sweaty and intense as possible.
But...fast forward to 2018, and I'm in a phase of my life where I'm craving more introspection and calm for my body. I want to have the ability to slow down when my heart begins to race. I'm searching for more stillness and inner peace. So, I went back to yoga this past weekend.
Class was a vinyasa flow -- we set intentions for our practice, eased our bodies into it, and the instructor was so great with some (much-needed) assists. And guys - I LOVED it. I forgot how good it feels when you hold a pose for long enough to feel your muscles shake. I forgot how good it feels to consciously meditate during Savasana at the end of class. And I forgot how good it feels to know that doing a yoga class is more than enough of a workout for the day.
So, here's to move intuitive movement for 2018 - and hopefully many more yoga classes to come. Maybe I'll even be able to touch my toes soon :).
What's your favorite form of intuitive movement right now?
